If you are a novice at decoding dream meanings, the whole dream interpretation process might seem like too much trouble and you may decide to just forget about it.

I still do this myself sometimes if the dream doesn't seem to have any real message, or it's just too jumbled to get any sense of progression. These types of dreams are typically release dreams. See Types of Dreams for more info on release dreams.

However, if you feel there really is a message embedded in your dream meanings somewhere, it's worth the few minutes of effort to take a look.

The dream question and answer method is the best way to start if you really don't have a clue what your dream is telling you.

Lets' take my red carpeted hallway dream as an example. By the way, it is a good idea after you've recorded your dream, to wait a few hours or even days to actually interpret it. A little time will make you more objective.

Okay ready? Here are some good questions I could ask myself, and then how I could answer. When you answer yourself, take the first thing that comes to mind, even if it makes no sense at the moment.

• Why are those hallways so steep? (Because I am thinking of something difficult to do.)
• How come the hallways are so wide? (So there's plenty of room for everyone)
• What does the red carpet mean? (The good life.)
• What does the Theater aspect represent? (The play of life)
• What are those heavy books I'm carrying? (Theories of other people)
• What aspect does Paul McCartney represent to me? (Creative genius, but down to earth)

And so on... At this point, I am starting to get some idea of what the dream meanings might be.

Pretty simple isn't it? Once you have a fairly clear idea of what the message is, you can either expand on it by changing the dream or by just letting it go if you feel satisfied with the outcome.

In reality, I did not use the question and answer method for this dream. In this case, I got a flash of detached insight while I was making a sandwich later that morning.
