A Walk Through Your Dream Houses

Next time you are taking a stroll in your own neighborhood, pay attention to the feelings that certain houses or other buildings bring about in yourself.

Some will be ordinary looking and won’t invite much response, but others will have something about them that will invite a feeling of appreciation, or perhaps one of distaste. Same for the interior of a home...you can get a sense of the character of the owner by the surrounding atmosphere.

Houses and buildings in dreams are much the same way, providing the setting for the theme of the emotion being portrayed. The first step in determining the meaning behind the house symbol is to look at these characteristics and get the overall feeling:

Is the house well kept, clean and bright? Or, is it dark, run down and tilted on it’s foundation? How big is it? What color is it...and so on. What feeling does it bring up for you?

Next, consider the house to be a symbol of yourself. Most dream experts do agree that the house is a symbol of the mind, or conscious self. But it can also portray parts of your body.

The structure of the house and its condition is your current state of being. This includes your physical, mental and spiritual state depending on the rest of the dream content...or it could be all three.

Each room that is actually shown in the dream is a clue to what is being conveyed.

Let’s go through the whole house from top to bottom and consider what the general meanings behind each area might be:

Roof...security, shelter, priorities or most important thoughts, head, a play on words such as “I raised the roof!”

Attic…stored memories, unused ability, absence of feeling, searching, hiding something

Bedroom…intimate relationships, sexuality, private self, rest and relaxation

Bathroom…the need to cleanse / rid oneself of a burden or guilt, rejuvenation or self renewal, need to detoxify (bad foods), wish for time alone

Kitchen…social self, helping with others’ needs, creativity, planning (cooking up of ideas), highlighting food choices, also consider any appliances being used within the kitchen as clues

Basement…unconscious mind, in denial of something, fears and dislikes, forgotten events, confusion

Garage...stored energy, transition, idle time or in limbo

Stairs…consider the 2 areas the stairs are connecting, ascent or descent of life progression or awareness, fear of failing (falling down stairs), play on words such as “stairway to heaven” (or some other place)

Floor...consider the condition of the floor, grounding, solid support, ethical or spiritual foundation, play on words such as “I was floored!”

Windows…the eyes, personal perception or outlook, outer events, possibilities, introspection, play on words such as “the window of opportunity” or “the window to the soul”

Doors…an open door to new experiences, a closed door could be closed mindedness or a inability to move on, a barrier, a missed opportunity, a shift in events or personal awareness

Hallways…a transitional period, change in thinking, a metaphorical passage of some sort, wandering or searching for answers

If you have trouble identifying just what the meaning is you can simply go back into the dream and find out what’s going on by asking questions of other people or objects. If you don't like the meaning, you can go back into the dream and CHANGE it! Your subconscious won’t know the difference :-)
